Dhan Teres

Dhan Teres This festival is celebrated on the Trayodashi date of Kartik Krishna Paksha.

Dhan Teres This festival is celebrated on the Trayodashi date of Kartik Krishna Paksha. It is a tradition to buy something new on this day. It is customary to buy brass and silver utensils. It is believed that whatever is purchased on this day has benefits. Money wealth increases. Therefore, Lakshmi is worshiped on this day. Dhanvantari also incarnated on this day, which is why it is called Dhan Teresa. Dhanvantari and Mata Lakshmi are among the fourteen gems received during the Samudra Manthan performed jointly by the gods and asuras. This date is also known as Dhantrayodashi.

Why are utensils bought on Dhanteras

Dhanvantari appeared on the day of Trayodashi of Kartik Krishna Paksha by the sea churning. When Dhanvantari appeared, he had an urn full of nectar in his hands. Lord Dhanwantari appeared with the urn, therefore, it is a tradition to buy utensils on this day. Especially brass and silverware should be purchased, because brass is the metal of Maharishi Dhanvantari. This brings health, good fortune and health benefits to the home. On the day of Dhanteras, worship of Kubera, god of wealth, and Yamdev is of special importance. This day is also known as Dhanvantari Jayanti.

On this day, Dhanvantari is worshiped along with Lakshmi. Deepawali is one of the major festivals in India. Deepotsav begins with Dhanteras. In Jain Agam (Jain literature ancient), Dhanteras is called 'Blessed Teras' or 'Dhyan Teres'. It is believed that Lord Mahavira had gone to the third and fourth meditations on this day to stop yoga. After three days of meditation, Nirvana (salvation) was achieved on the day of Deepavali while doing yoga. Since then, this day became famous in Jain Agam as Blessed Teres. Dhanteras is also celebrated as National Ayurveda Day.

Importance of lighting a lamp in the south direction on Dhanteras

On the Dhanteras, lamps are lit in the south direction. The story behind this is somewhat like this. One day the envoy asked Yamraj in the same words that there is a way to avoid premature death? While answering this question, Yamdev said that the person who keeps a lamp in the south direction in the name of Yama on the evening of Dhanteras does not have a premature death. According to this belief, in the evening of Dhanteras, people light a lamp in the courtyard in the name of Yama Deity towards the south. As a result, the worshiper and his family get protection from the wrath of death god Yamraj. Especially if the Lakshmi of the house donates a lamp on this day, the whole family remains healthy.

Dhanteras Puja Vidhi

Worshiping in the evening brings special fruit. Place the idol of Lord Kubera and Dhanvantari on the north side of the place of worship and worship them. Along with this, there is a law for worship of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Shrinesh. It is believed that Lord Kubera should offer white sweets, while Dhanvantari should offer yellow sweets. Because Dhanvantari loves yellow things more. It is fruitful to use flowers, fruits, rice, roli, sandalwood, incense and lamps in worship. On the occasion of Dhanteras, there is also the practice of removing a lamp in the name of Yamdev. Yama should be bowed with reverence by lighting a lamp.
